Our new best friends - Otter Box and Rice

I promise you will understand the title more here in a bit. I am going to explain to you why everyone who has a cell phone must keep rice around.
My husband and I have had cell phones for years. He is rougher on them than I am and he ruined his last phone. He will say that it isn't totally ruined, we just need to charge the battery in my phone since his phone won't charge it! But it isn't ruined....
I went to renew our contract and had all sorts of issues. I wanted to come home with two iPhones. We wanted 16GB. We ended up after a day of hassles coming home with ONE iPhone 3G S 32 GB. We also paid more but he now has a phone. The issues that I had are a whole other post that I may or may not do. We will be able to get the second home in a couple weeks and then we will both be happy. But I digress...
When I got the phone I also bought an Otter Box case to put on it. As I said before, Mister can be rough on phones. As I was paying I was thinking "this $50 case better be worth it and protect this phone. I can't believe that I am paying this much for a PHONE CASE." This conversation kept going with myself as I was walking out to the car. I took the phone home and after some other issues that had to be resolved Mister has a new white iPhone 3G S. On Saturday we went to watch some friends of ours weigh in at a fishing tournament. While walking from the dock to the bank my husband, who can't be bothered to slow down and wait for 3 seconds, hits the phone on one of the poles that is supporting the hand rails on the ramp. I hear the sound of something hitting the ramp and then KER-PLOSH!!!!! I look down and see my husbands one day old phone settling in 8 inches of water at the edge of the bank. I am yelling at him to get the phone (I won't use the actual language that I used, it wasn't the best) and when he got down and grabbed it, the phone was still on. On a side note, as I was running up the ramp, I got stung by something on the bottom of my foot. Back to the phone, we took the case off and stuck it in the warm car to try and dry out. Because of the $50 Otter Box there were 3 spots that water could get in, the speaker at the top that you hear out of and the two speaker that are at the bottom that you talk into or the noise comes out of when it is on speaker phone. The Otter Box has sealed everything else up so that the damage was minimal. We go finish watching the weigh in (our friends won!) and then went home. The phone had gotten too hot in the car so we had to wait for it to cool down. Then we noticed the biggie - condensation on the lens of the camera, on the back of the phone. We pulled the sim card our but didn't close it totally back, so that moisture could still get out and be absorbed. I then went and got what would become our best friend - RICE!!! We put the phone in a quart sized bag, put the rice in the bag sealed it up and let the rice do its work. The next day there was no condensation on the lens and the phone has worked wonderful since. I am just thankful that it worked!
The moral of the story is that 1) always keep rice on hand to absorb the liquid out of electronics and 2) that $50 spent on an Otter Box case is well worth it in the end!

I am in no way being compensated by Otter Box, Minute Rice or any other company. But I am getting another phone soon and will be putting an Otter Box on it so if they would like to send me a pink one that would be fine! The opinions expressed are solely my own opinions and I didn't receive anything for the opinions that were stated.

DARE tournament 2010

I keep forgetting to write about this so here it is!!!

May 8, 2010 was the date for the annual DARE fishing tournament that we fish in every year. The second year that we fished it I got a crank bait stuck in my leg among other things. Tons of fun. You really should revisit it. Last year the water was high but nothing of great importance necessarily happened.

This year was wonderful! We blasted off (boat #42) which I was excited about. We had a lot of firsts. This was my first blast off in the four years that we have been fishing it. We caught a full 5 fish limit, which was another first. I got to cull one of my husband's fish out !!!

We had a great time and caught tons of different fish. We caught a 40 lb. gar, white bass, drum, crappie, a couple of little, itty, bitty bass who were hitting a crank bait that was almost the same size as they are.

We didn't get in the money but we got to weigh in a full limit which ended up weighing 11. 2 lbs, had some great food afterwards and got to see my second favorite DARE officer, Jon. The father-in-law has GOT to be my favorite. We were in the top half and we have already set a goal to improve next year. Can't wait to fish again next year!

letting go of control

As I was bouncing on the boat seat as we were going across the water during the tournament this weekend, I began to think. I am a person who likes her t's crossed and her i's dotted. I don't like change and I like to plan. At Christmas where we go for family gatherings is orderly and sterile. If you ask me on December 6 to come to your house on the 24th at 7 I put down the information and a 1 is put by your even and circled. You were the first to ask. It continues as people keep asking. If there are changes, it is based on who asked and when. Kinda crazy I know, but it is my way of having some semblance of control. What I realized as I was bouncing on the seat of the boat is I have no control.

Boats aren't equipped with seat belt and I always felt out of sorts since all I have to hold onto as the passenger is a shiny bar in front of me. That shiny bar doesn't always help you out when poles are riding up. But when we hit the ways perfectly everything is okay and we are flying across the water. But then the waves from the larger boats start coming towards you and you have no control. You may just get splashed by some water or you may ride that wave up and the boat comes out of the water. You hear the engine revving up and then you hear (and feel!) the "SMACK!!!" as you come down, hitting the water.

I realized that life is the same way. We can be cruising along, not a care in the world and we ride the wave of life up and then all of a sudden there is nothing below us and we are stuck in mid-air. As we are stuck we are wondering what is getting ready to happen. But we have not control over what is getting ready to happen.

But it will be okay, we will all get through it. Some of these waves are bigger than others but there is the falling to look forward to because after the fall comes the calm and we can recoup and get ready for the next wave that will undoubtedly come. By letting go of the control that we so badly want, we can enjoy the ride and not expect what will come next.

Snaggin' for Spoonbill

In Oklahoma, spring comes which means rain. With the rain comes a raise in the river which means snaggin' for all the rednecks who love this sport.

We snag for spoonbill which is not any more complicated than it sounds. You have a large rod with heavy line, a barbless treble hook and a lead weight/sinker on the end. You throw out and pull back, then swing forward while you are reeling. You continue until your hook and sinker get near you, reel it totally in and then repeat. It actually is a great work out and I caught my first of the season on Monday night.

Some information from the Oklahoma Wildlife Department:

When it comes to unusual, it doesn’t get much stranger than the paddlefish.
The paddlefish takes its common and scientific names from its distinctive snout,
which is greatly elongated and flattened into a paddle shape. One of Oklahoma’s
largest fish, the paddlefish feeds on tiny zooplankton (microscopic insects)
and, like a shark, it has a completely cartilaginous skeletal system.

The paddlefish was alive when dinosaurs were rumbling around in the Jurassic Period.
Paddlefish are one of the most unique fish in Oklahoma. They can live up to
30-35 years ranging throughout the U.S., from Montana to Louisiana. In Oklahoma,
they are found mainly in the Grand, Neosho and Arkansas River systems. The
Wildlife Department promulgates rules to increase the protection for paddlefish
to ensure this prehistoric fish will thrive through a few more Ice Ages.

Male paddlefish are old enough to spawn when they are four to nine years.
Females spawn when they are 6-12 years old. Spawning season is from March
through June, when spring rains raise the water levels of rivers and water
temperatures reach 50-60 degrees. Males and females gather in schools and
release their eggs over gravel or sandbars. This is called "broadcast spawning."
By the end of their first year, baby paddlefish grow about 10 to 12 inches. They
can live up to 35 years.

Paddlefish are caught by snagging, usually beginning sometime in March and ending in late April, during their early spring spawning run. This prehistoric fish can be caught by snagging with a stout surf rod, heavy test line, and a large barbless treble hook.

Paddlefish were once very abundant, but have declined in numbers. Threats to paddlefish include:
-Construction of dams which have affected breeding and feeding patterns
-Fish kills and water quality issues associated with dam operations
-Illegal harvest of adult paddlefish for caviar

In 1992 fisheries biologists began an effort to re-introduce paddlefish to some of the waters they
once roamed. Dams on several rivers had blocked the annual movements of
paddlefish in several river systems. Hatchery professionals raised young
paddlefish at fish hatcheries in Byron and Tishomingo and then released them in
Kaw, Oologah, Texoma, and Hugo lakes.

Brent Gordon, Northeast Region Fisheries Biologist for the Wildlife Department, is working to develop a management plan for this unique species. Gordon and his colleagues have placed
tags on thousands of paddlefish in Grand and Ft. Gibson Lakes, and tags are
currently being placed on paddlefish in Hudson Lake in an effort to get a better
understanding of the status of the paddlefish population. This research is being
paid for through the federally-administered State Wildlife Grant.

When you see the rod bow and feel the pull of the fish there is nothing that is a greater rush than the time that you spend fighting with this animal, trying to get it in. We snag for the sport but there are those who keep the fish. You are allowed to keep one a day and once you tag one to keep you are done fishing for the day. Barbless hooks are used so that there is less damage to the fish and the fish can be put back into the water quicker.

Spoonbill are a truly amazing species. If you were ever able to see one up close they actually have a beautiful design on their skin, almost like hundreds of flowers all over them. I am looking forward to snaggin' quite a few more over the next few weeks, me and my pink pole. Yes, I seriously have a white and pink pole. I love to get down by the bank with the boys and show them that a girl can do everything that they do!

Here are a few pictures from Tuesday night at the river.

Fish On!!!

He is enjoying the fight and embarrassed that I cornered him and got the picture!

The angler in the blue has a fish on. The angler in the camo is waiting to "land" it for him. He will grab the fish pull the hook out and either throw it back or carry it up to the bank, whichever the angler who caught it prefers. We are always helping each other out. This was a man who was well over 6 feet to give you an idea of how large the fish was.

Here she is! She was beautiful. The angler decided that when he caught her, he was done and was going home! Can't say that I blame him!

Another angler with a fish hooked.
Walt has another one on!
This angler is waiting to land the fish of another angler who has hooked it.
(shhhhh.... don't tell anyone, but that is my gorgeous husband. I have to show him off!!!)
And it is mission accomplished. Am I wrong on the gorgeous part? I didn't think so!
His is 5'10" so that gives you an idea of the size of the fish.
A group of anglers snagging on the bank of the river
We love to snag and catch these amazing fish but we also want to educate those around us about the conservation and proper treatment of the fish. If you have any questions ask and I will answer them. If you are wondering about it, I am sure that you aren't the only one! And if I don't know the answer, I will find out for you!

Phones at what age?!?!?!?

While I was tanning tonight I was thinking about how I would be lost without my cell phone. Matt and I both have one and use them constantly. But, these are our only phones. We haven had a land line in over 8 years. I don't even think that I could tell you the numbers for the two landlines that I had.
After tanning I was reading through the tweets that I had missed and one was talking about sharing their phone with their children. She stated that her now teenager had shared her phone when she was younger and now her second and third child were doing the same. She also stated that her children were the only ones who didn't have phones in their classes.
Am I just crazy in thinking that this is wrong?????
I got my first cell phone when I was 19 and I paid for all of it. I haven't had anyone else around to take care of me so I do it on my own. I could not imagine, ten years later, allowing a child to have a cell phone with not controls. Mister and I have talked about when we have kids that there will be regulations put on the phones. They will not be in rooms at night, they will have a set number of minutes (possibly prepaid), and any other ways that we can think to be mean parents and embarrass our kids :) .
Am I the only one though who sees that this is a problem???? Kids today aren't outside enough and aren't physical enough. I like the Wii as much as anyone but we also take the time to go and shoot our bows, walk down a creek fishing, fish in the pond or the lake. We find things to do. I see so many kids who don't know what the outdoors are. I hope that we can change this soon, since this is the only way that we can pass down the knowledge that we have of the wonderful resources that we have.
Do you know kids who have cell phones? How old are they and there limitations??? I would love to have a starting point and maybe get some more discussion out of this!

First Tournament of 2010

This is what my husband is doing to day. I am at home doing homework and will go to watch the weigh-in in a couple of hours. I am so proud of him for striving to continue to do what he loves. In fact, I am somewhat jealous right now since I am stuck, inside, doing homework. But it will all pay off in the end. Hopefully this tournament will be a good one for them!

Genetic testing results and DEER HUNTING

First off this is my wonderful hubby and his fishing partner. A friend of ours who has mentored them had the shirts made for them and have a pink ribbon on the right lapel of these shirts. His wife has dealt with breast cancer and now is dealing with lung cancer and they know my family history. Tomorrow is the second day of the tournament at the end of the trail. Hope they do good tomorrow!!!

**************************************************
My genetic testing results came back..... And they were negative. That means that I don't have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. There are about 18 other genes that can cause the breast cancer so I will have to continue the preventative measures but I know that the two big genes aren't a factor.
**************************************************
Bow season opened up October 1st. I got to go out for the first time with Matt on October 3rd. They put me up in a tree stand and this was one that they hadn't seen any deer out of. In fact the guys stand that it was said that he thought there weren't any deer going there. I had been in my stand for probably 20 minutes and this doe comes in. She is 6 yards away from me!!! I sat watching her eat the corn for 15 minutes. When she had her head down I started to pull but she busted me about half way through my pull. She walked away but then came back towards me and stomped. I still was sitting there waiting. She walked back into some brush so I pulled back and waited but she went out a different way so I released my tension. I didn't think that she would come back but believe it or not she came back a third time. I never could get a good shot at her but just wait, I am going to keep trying to get a shot at her. She had some very distinct markings so I can't wait to get her! I will be shooting G5 Montec CS broadheads. Can't wait to see what they do when I get a shot!!!! I was very very upset that I didn't get to shoot her but Matt has just kept telling me that I was very lucky to get to see a deer my first night hunting, much less to get her 6 yards away. I am thankful that I did get to see her and I never want to take a bad shot. Lets just hope that I get to shoot one soon!!!!

Happy Fourth & a lesson learned

First off Happy 4th of July! I hope it is safe and fun for everyone!

We went out to go fishing this morning before all the other people got out. One of the first places that we went there were Canadian geese all over. I started counting them and there were over 150 total. It amazed me watching them but one of the things that I saw was that in each smaller group there was a tame goose. The beautiful black and tan Canadians had adopted a white goose in the middle of them. It made me realize the beauty of nature. These creatures were color blind and have adopted this different goose into the group. In fact I saw one that was flying with the group and making up a spot in the "V". I know that this post is kinda random but I hope that you were able to see the beauty in this.....

DARE Tournament 2009

On Saturday the Masons put on a tournament for a DARE officer and this was our 3rd year to fish it. I know that nothing could top last year's tournament but we still had fun! The water has been up on the lake for a few weeks now and right before the tournament we got more rain so it was even higher. Keep in mind this is our THIRD year to fish and this is my THIRD year to not be able to blast off... So I guess we will try for next year!!! Instead of putting in at Martin's we had the choice to trailer to any ramp we wanted to and trailer back. So we sat waiting in line and took off to our ramp a little after six. Matt caught a fish right off and then we fought all day to find any more. I couldn't catch a fish if my life depended on it! I could tell him where to catch fish but couldn't do it myself!!! In the end we weighed in 4 fish and our total weight came to 8.23 lbs. Not bad considering the day that we had. This tournament is for a great cause and Jon does a great thing. He works for a sheriff's department at night and is volunteering to do the DARE program during the day. Looking forward to next year!!

3 weeks left...

I just wanted to let you all know that I have 3 weeks left!!! Then this semester will be done! I am excited to have the time to spend fishing with hubby. We are planning on doing alot of that this summer. And speaking of fishing we are fishing the DARE tournament on May 9th and hopefully I won't end up with another crankbait in my leg....

I also wanted to let everyone know that I am sorta gonna be an aunt!!! My friend Brandy just found out that she is pregnant. So the middle of December I will be able to be holding a baby again. And this is my baby fix for the next couple years since I need to finish school...

Please be sending up some prayers for Kathy. It came back that it is lung cancer. The next step is seeing what to do... It is making me face some really tough thoughts and some really tough problems in my life too. I am still trying to save to do the propholactic masectomy. I am just in one of those moods and it is making me think more about cancer....

Bows, ears, meds, and life in general

So first off, I was suffering with the ear pressure and the itching. Monday night I started taking Benedryl and Sudafed and it did something. My ears weren't hurting anymore, My whole face was now. I knew then that it was something with my sinuses. So I decided I would give it a couple of days to work its way up and if it hadn't towards the end of the week I was going to the doctor. I was feeling like my head was going to explode and my teeth were killing me. So Thursday I gave in and went to the Express Care that opened up this last week. The PA that I was talking about in the last post is there so it wasn't like I was going somewhere that no one knew me. I walked in at the Express Care and left at 3:30. I was figuring that I knew what it was and I was right. I got the whole thing of "you should have came in sooner", "I know that you must have been hurting" and all that normal stuff. The next thing that came out of her mouth was " you have a severe sinus infection so instead of 10 days of antibiotics I am putting you on 15 days worth. Instead of taking them twice a day you need to take them every 8 hours. You are going to take Flonase twice a day as well as Mucinex twice a day." I guess when I do it I do it good!!! So I am feeling better, still sleeping sitting up because of the drainage but my face doesn't feel like it is going to explode!!!

So in other good news Matt got the "boatport" done. This is an area to park the boat. That was its total purpose. Something that you park a car under is called..... a carport. So something that we park our boat under is.......a boatport! I am working on making him a sign to hang up, he just doesn't know it yet! I have the wood so I need some paint, hooks and some chain!

And to keep the good new coming, we got our bows last weekend!!!! Matt got a Hoyt AlphaMax 32 and I got a Diamond Razor Edge by Bowtek. We are both extremely happy and excited to get them. The only down side of this is that the dealer has been waiting on a shipment of arrows and hasn't got them yet. Matt will be shooting 400s and I will be shooting 500s. His will be wrapped with the American flag and has two red feathers and one white feather. Mine will be wrapped with pink flames and have two pink zebra print vanes and one white zebra print vane. I didn't realize that Ted Nugent and I have so much in common and like to accessorize the same!!!

Matt and Phil have their first tournament in a couple weeks so I will officially have Saturdays to myself and Sundays will be my day on the lake! Yeah!!! I am excited. Most people don't understand how I am so excited about having him gone on Saturdays but that is my time. I will get to stitch and finish some projects, get some reading done and also get some homework done. Also I am trying to get some large tests that I have to take for school done so I will be taking those. I have to pass one of these in order to be admitted into the teaching program and the other two have to be passed in order to graduate. So I figure that I can get started!

And lastly, I have lost about 10 pounds so far. It is coming off slowly and in good increments so I am happy right now with it!

I hope that this weekend is nice and we can shoot our arrows, as long as they come in!!! That would make this weekend PERFECT!!!!

May 10th 2008 -- DARE Fishing Tournament

Okay, so most of you knew that Matt and I fish a lot. We had a tournament this weekend that benefitted DARE in Bartlesville! (Had fun Jon!!!!). So here is the story of our weekend...

Blast of was to be at 6 or safe light so our alarm was set for 3:30. This was a huge feat considering we didn't get to bed till after midnight 'cause we HAD to go to the monster trucks. (It was worth the late night though!!!) We got up, got everything in the boat, fed and took care of both of the girls and kenneled them and headed for the lake. We get there in plenty of time and I get out of the truck to go check in and get our number. I normally help him get the boat ready to unload but since I was getting the number he did it all by his self. I jump in the boat and we get it unloaded and I am waiting for Matt on the outside of one of the docks. We look in the floor board and there was water. It was wet with dew when we left but not with water in the floor boards!!!! so we trailer the boat back up and Matt takes the plug out and puts it in. We unload the boat for the second time and start out towards the mouth of Echo Bay. We hear the numbers called 24, 25, 26, 27, 28...We notice, yet once again that there is water in the floor board AGAIN... So....we hear our number called, number 30, and we drive back to Martin's and trailer the boat and have the bilge pump going. Matt looks and he had put the plug back into the same hole!!! So this time we take out to go and fish. All the other boats have blasted off already ( I missed another blast off this year, maybe next year!!) so we take off. We get to the other side of the lake and fish. Caught one first thing that measured and kept fishing. We kept moving around so the trolling motor was being pulled up and put back down. About 4 hours into it Matt was pulling the trolling motor up and busted the plastic prop off the trolling motor.... So we felt and heard vibrations for the next 5 hours. Then as we were leaving and coming back and the wind had picked up and the water was rough. About two minutes into the bouncing across the lake I felt a sharp pain in my right thigh. Well one of the lures that I was using was this gorgeous crank bait. 20 minutes later we pull into a cove that has the beautiful huge homes that are on Shangri-La's golf course. The types of houses that have windows that are as big as my house.... The people are rolling in the money and like everything just so. I look at Matt and ask him if we can pull the crank bait out of my leg. He starts freaking out, "why didn't you tell me?". Oh yeah, I can see us in the middle of the lake bobbing up and down trying to get that out.. I Don't Think So!!!! so we start looking. The only way that it can be looked at good is for me to pull my capri's down to my knees. so everyone by Shangri-La's golf course got to see that I was wearing pink underwear. So after looking we decided to push it on through since it was buried deep, past the barb. so each of the hooks had to be cut lose to get to the one single hook. So laying on the deck of the boat Matt took a pair of needle nose pliers and cut the hooks and the main part off them grabbed onto the single hook and pushed it through. Hurt like hell.... But it kinda felt like getting one of my tattoos....So we continued fishing and didn't catch anything but had one heck of a day!!! Maybe we will weigh in more that one fish next time....

Triton Team Trail Championship

Matt has a tournament tomorrow and Sunday and is super excited about it. He is in his "game mode" and we are discussing nothing but fishing. It is what we will be living for the next two days. We have been talking about where he is going, what he needs to throw, what he should take, which poles and all that other good stuff. So I will be up tonight, seeing where they are in the take off. They are 67 of 370. Only 270 of the 370 qualified so hopefully they will finish close to the top. I hope they do 'cause they owe me a steak dinner!!! Be thinking of them and help me with the hope that they place high!!!

Fishing trouble

Thought I would put some pics up of the girls and Matt. They "help" him when he is practicing with his bow. They even run up with him when he is getting the arrows out of the targets. As you can see there are cows in the background and Sasha LOVES to bark at them.
Other news Matt was fishing a tournament today and something broke on the boat. We think that when he hit something it messed something big up.... so we have to hurry and get it fixed, he has a guide trip in a couple of weeks and a tournament in a month.... So I had to go to Martin's, get the boat trailer and truck and meet them to load it. It took them to get an hour and a half to get from Drowning Creek to the mouth of Duck Creek and then they had run the batteries down that power the trolling motor so GRDA pulled them on in!!! I was glad 'cause I was waiting on them. I had spent an hour trying to get a hold of the tournament director. They only listed home phone numbers, not cell phone numbers so I was trying to track down a cell phone number and then told me that they couldn't trailer the boat in, they had to send their fish in with some other contestant. They didn't get to weigh in so it was a huge waste of money and will end up costing us more but I am glad that it wasn't during a more expensive tournament!!! So five hours later we get home...and still don't know for sure what is going on with the motor.
On better news the girls sat outside with us tonight. The weather has been cool in the evenings so they are able to stay out with us longer. We love to watch them play with each other. They think they are the size of the other one and have tons of fun with each other. They run around, tackling & rolling. Roxy loves the water and we have a water pan that is bigger just for her. She runs over there and sticks her face in it up to her eyes and then takes of running again. They are looking so cute!!! I love the picture of them together.

I don't know how many of you know but I have a tattoo on my foot for my mom. She passed away from breast cancer 2o years ago this year. Dave did such an awesome job on it and it is my favorite one out of my 8 that I have. As we were sitting out it looked good and I thought that I needed to show everyone a good picture of it!!!

One more week and I am back to school. I can't wait! 3 classes this semester and that means three closer to my degree. Can't wait!

Fish Bait!!!

So Matt and a couple of guys from work were going fishing. I am helping them load the boat and what do we see????
Fish bait!!! Actually they started out on the stands that the electronic fish finders go on so we were laughing that they could "find fish" or the fish would find them! We have been finding more frogs and toads around the house this year. We really have to watch the girls and make sure that they don't eat them. Roxy has already tried that and scared me to death!

I am baby-sitting a yellow lab for one of the guys tonight and it has been fun but tiring. He is much more active than our girls!!! And somewhat destructive too! But they have fun playing with him while he is here. And it will make them sleep well tonight!
