Good morning!!!!




The temps have started to drop and in Oklahoma, black powder opens this weekend.

We have been bow hunting hard and haven't got anything yet, which is strange. I hope I have a gorgeous deer to show you this weekend!

Hunting season 2010

We have been blessed to be able to hunt quite a bit this year and harvest some nice deer to go in our freezer. Mister's grandpa drew out for an elk hunt and we are lucky enough to get some of that too! Our friends have also had good luck this year and have meat to put in their freezers also. Here are some of the deer and elk from the 2010 hunting season.

Southern OK Elk hunt

In Oklahoma you put in for a hunt in southern Oklahoma to hunt elk. It is estimated that they receive 50,00 entries for the approximately 400 tags they give out. I am one of those that keep putting in, hoping that I will be drawn sometime. M drew out 4 years ago and his grandpa went with him. This year his grandpa drew out and M was luck enough to go with him on his hunt. The second person is only allowed to help carry the elk out. They went a couple days early and looked around and saw some amazing sights. The first full day they were there they came back to see the deer eating on a loaf of bread that a raccoon had gotten into the night before. They took the loaf from the deer and tried to feed them. This is what I got from M a few minutes later.
They said it was amazing. I love to hunt deer but also respect the beauty of the deer. They are some of the most beautiful animals around. I will have more pictures from their trip later!

4 point buck

This weekend M and his grandpa went hunting and his grandpa came in with a nice buck. A four-point that was beautiful. He had more black than we are used to seeing so it was nice to see something different.

Forked horn (Four Point) named Circles

Meet Circles! He is called this because of his tendency to walk in circles! M saw him the week before I shot my big buck and he walked circles in front of him. When we got home we matched him to one of the four points on the trail cam.

He was the deer that my eight point was fighting and ran when I shot. Within 15 minutes he was back out in front of me, walking circles! I can't wait to see him grow up. In a couple years I wouldn't mind harvesting him for the meat and the pretty set that he will have to put on the wall. He is a perfectly matched four point right now, so I can't wait to see what he will grow up to be.

This weekend starts rifle season in Oklahoma. Can't wait to see what I can get then!

MY first deer of 2010

This weekend was the opening of black powder in Oklahoma. I was bummed because I had to work opening morning but Mister go to go out. At 5 am I woke up to hear rain beating down on our roof. I will be totally honest, I was somewhat glad that I was working. I just really didn't want to go hunt in the rain. Mister and his grandpa went out and didn't see anything until they were walking to the truck. It quit raining before they got to where they were hunting but the wind was blowing something fierce.

We were planning on going somewhere else that night but it was raining and we all discussed it and decided to not got Saturday evening. The wind was still blowing like crazy and none of us really wanted to fight it. There were gusts of over 30 MPH! We watched the UFC fights and got home about midnight.
Sunday morning they went while I stayed home to do homework and work on the house a little bit. They got home and didn't see a thing again. We decided to meet up at 4ish and go out to one spot where we have different tree stands.
I am going to give you a little background. I shot my first buck last year out of the tree stand that I set in. This was my first buck. I spotted him myself and was so proud of him. I actually thought that he was a she!!! I told Mister's grandfather that I shot big doe. He was a spike and was 115 lbs field dressed. This is why I am picky about who or IF anyone hunts in my stand. It is a perfect location and we are trying to manage the population of the deer in this area.
Now that you know all that let's move forward. Sunday evening as we were getting ready I looked at Mister and said " I am going to shoot a deer tonight". He grinned and said "I hope you do but don't get your hopes up so high that you will be upset". He was trying to prepare me since it was still windy and was 78 degrees outside.
I put on my camo and we headed to the stand. I crawled up into my stand. Made sure everything was ready and waited. I got excited when the cows left the area that I was in. I am in a stand that is a box so I can move around a little bit and take my phone to play with. I saw a coyote run down the fence line, lay down and look around and then get up and start running again. I had a wasp up in the trees stand that was hunting with me. A squirrel runs across the field and jumps into another tree. The nature that you see is amazing but I also had my phone to keep me company. I had been playing Words With Friends and had ran my battery down so I put it in my bag and switched sides of my trees stand to where I was facing west.
I heard something behind me and looked over my shoulder. I saw a forked horn buck (four point) coming up and decided that I would take a shot if it presented itself. I switched to the other side of the stand to where I could face the east. He is a buck that we had pictures of on the trail camera and I had already said that if the opportunity presented itself I was going to shoot him. I pulled up, clicked the safety off and waited for him to turn perfectly broadside so that I could take a shot. Then I noticed something coming up behind him. I looked up over my gun and saw a gorgeous buck. I decided to see how big he was and saw that he was at least a 7 point buck (I thought), so I made my decision that I was changing bucks!
I pulled the gun over and put my cross hairs on him. He was still walking towards me so I just watched him. He was so pretty. The smaller buck walked up to him and the bigger buck stopped and just bristled. The smaller buck smelled the bigger bucks horns and the big buck turned away. The big buck then began walking again and soon turned broadside to me. I had been watching him the whole time through the scope so I was ready. I centered the cross hairs just behind his shoulder, took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. Instead of the BOOM that I was expecting to hear, I heard CLICK. My stomach dropped then.
I think every hunter gets nervous or excited when they see the deer and make the decision that the one particular deer is "the one". Hearing that click was a stressful sound to me though. Like I said, I am basically in a box so I reach over to my bag, grab my extra primers, open them up and grab one. I kept my head still the whole time and really figured that they were going to run when they heard the click, but they didn't. I pull the bolt up and back on my muzzle loader and watch them when it makes the noises that it makes. Again, I thought they were going to run. They were still standing there. I take the primer off the nipple and put a new one on. I push the bolt frontwards and down and it makes a noise again but they stayed.

When I looked up this time I saw a sight that Mister still hasn't gotten to see and I had only hoped that I would see - the two bucks had started fighting with each other. I have seen it on TV but to see the two bucks looking at each other and the hit horns/heads and go at each other is amazing. I watched for a few seconds and got the big buck in my cross hairs again, waiting for a good broadside shot. I took a deep breath to relax, because honestly I was shaking from the stress of all the little accidents that were piling up. When I got my good broadside shot I lined the cross hairs up behind his shoulder and pulled the trigger. His legs kicked up higher than his head and they both took off.

I made a rookie mistake and watched both deer. It is amazing to see what they do when spooked. I immediately called Mister whose first words out of his mouth were "did you get him?". What came out of my mouth was YeahhekickedrealhighandIthinkitisa6pointnoa7pointbutitcouldbean8pointandtheprimerdidn't
gooffandsoIhadtoputanewoneonImadeagoodshottheywerefightingandheisagoodbuckthey
snuckuponmehe'sareallygoodbuck. Which was a run-on sentence that is said in one breath and actually comes out to be - Yeah he kicked real high and I think it is a 6 point no a 7 point but it could be an 8 point and the primer didn't go off and so I had to put a new one on I made a good shot they were fighting and he is a good buck they snuck up on me he's a really good buck.

Keep in mind I was shaking like a leaf from the adrenaline that was pumping at that time. Mister got down out of his stand and came over to mine which is 200 yards from mine. As he was walking over the small buck came back! He walked back and forth in front of us for 10 minutes, never getting spooked. We talked while he was there since Mister was 15 yards behind me and once he left Mister came over to my stand. I got down and we started looking for blood knowing that we didn't have long. I made the shot at 6:28 pm. We couldn't find any blood and I was getting worried. I kept telling him, "I made a good shot and I saw him kick his legs up. I know I hit him". We had his grandfather with us who can be a bit impatient so we went to pick him up and brought him back to help us look. It was dark by this time and I was worried. I crawled back up in my tree stand and told them about where I shot him.

Before I even started to get out of my stand I heard Mister say that he had found blood. We kept looking, putting a flashlight where the last spot of blood was, tracking him. We actually found very little blood. Any blood that we saw was a little bit bigger than the top of a pencil eraser. Grandpa made a big loop around and didn't see anything. He thought that I was too worked up after the primer and hadn't made a good shot. Mister was bound and determined to find him though. He made the same loop that Grandpa did and just about missed my buck also. He was laying up against a tree and looked like a log! Mister called me over and we drug him out of the woods.
He was an 8 point buck that field dressed at 140 lbs. He was beautiful and we decided to get him mounted. This is the first deer that either of us has thought was big enough to be mounted. It is also the largest deer that either of us has shot. We put the time on the tag and took it to show a few people. The rack is around 120 inches, which is not a bad deer at all!
I kept trying to check it in but couldn't. Oklahoma now has a program where you can check your deer in online. We did that with Mister's deer the weekend before and I tried to with mine. I though that maybe I was just having issues with the phone so when we got home Mister got everything together and started to process the deer, while I tried to check him in online. I still was unable to check him in. Mister called one game warden that we know and got his voicemail and we left a message explaining that we couldn't check the deer in. He called another one and got his voicemail, explained the situation again and then we called his home number. No answer on that line either, but we did get a phone call from the 2nd game warden within 2 minutes and I learned all sorts of information. You have 24 hours to check the deer in, the game wardens are very nice and helpful and when you screw it up the next day checking it in they are really nice in OKC.
We got him skinned and cut up at about midnight. We took care getting the cape skinned off of him and throwing it in the fridge to take to the taxidermist tomorrow. The quarters are cooling out in the freezer. I am still on cloud nine from the buck that I worked to get, held myself in check to get and who was fighting to keep his territory. It also isn't a bad thing that I shot a bigger deer than Mister and get to put the first mount on the wall!

First deer of the season

Look at what Mister got! About 100 lbs. 5 points. He made the shot from 50 yards with his bow. First deer of this season. I am so proud of him. Next year I will try and get the first one. I have been home with bronchitis and have not been feeling good. I don't think that coughing will draw the deer in and I can't stop so no crawling up in a tree stand yet.....

Bow season opens today!!!

I am so pumped because today is the opening day of bow season in Oklahoma. It is 74 degrees with a 3 MPH North wind. It is going to be perfect. Mister and a friend went out this morning and didn't shoot anything. The friend saw a doe but she wasn't within range. The deer have been eating my corn so I am excited to see if I can finally shoot something with my bow!!!!

The picture that I put up yesterday was of poison ivy that I got into sometime. I went and got a steroid shot yesterday morning at the AM clinic and was worried about whether I would be able to wear contacts or not today. I woke up this morning and the poison ivy as less noticeable than yesterday and my MIL said that it would be okay to put my contacts in!!! So I am looking forward to getting off work and heading out to the woods. Good luck to all you other hunters!!!

Hunting tip - Corn for your deer

Bow season open here in Oklahoma on Friday and we are all ready! We have been checking our stands and making any changes that need to be made for the last month. One other thing we have been doing is setting out salt licks, putting apples out in some places and corn out in others. In years past we have bought our corn from the local co-op and stored them in 55 gallon drums. This year we are trying to be creative and found one way to save money on putting corn out for the deer. We have places that we hunt that are corn fields. As we are walking across we always see whole ears of corn that were missed when the field was cut.After talking to the farmers who have the fields and they said they didn't mind us picking it up. So we now take a bucket and pick up the whole ears of dried corn that are laying around. Then when we are ready we dump them out around where our feeders are and leave them for the deer to feast on.
I would be sure to ask the farmer who has the land if they mind if you walk the cut corn field and pick up the left over dried corn. We store ours in buckets or bags and then dump them out when ever we need them.
This is a good way to save money but still give the deer the extra nutrition that you are wanting them to have. It is a win-win situation for all! Hope this helps you out?

Meet My New Friend, Katydid

Meet my friend, Katydid. At 12:30 this morning he woke me up. That is the most gosh darn awful sound that you can ever hear inside the house. We were in a dead sleep and here him rubbing his wings together. In our waking up from a dead sleep stupor we were trying to figure out what the noise was... We have 10 foot high ceilings in our house. We saw this bright green object on the wall, almost to the ceiling. So I said the smartest thing that I could think of in my stupor "Hit him with a towel". I know, I am smart when I am awakened out of a dead sleep. Here is the deal, Mister did it. Then our new friend flew around a little bit, landed on me, I tried to grab him and missed. He ended up on the floor, where Mister was hitting him with the towel again. Then he was gone. So we went back to bed and a couple hours later our friend decided that he wanted to talk again. Mister got up and tried to hit him with the towel again. Then he was gone, again. So we went back to bed and slept peacefully until the alarm went off. I am hoping that our friend will stay outside and not wake us up tonight. He sounds beautiful outside, just not in my house wanting to talk in the early hours of the morning!

In Oklahoma they have hunts that you can draw out for. The Wildlife Department looks at where the deer population needs the most management. They also have hunts for other species of animals in Oklahoma. I have been putting in for an either sex tag on the elk hunt for 5 years now. Mister drew out with a cow tag 3 years ago and harvested a beautiful cow. This year Mister drew out for a hunt during muzzle loading the the southern part of the state. He will be able to harvest 2 doe, on top of any that we shoot here. Mister's grandfather drew out for an elk hunt! He has been putting in for 40 years and finally drew out. He has a cow tag and is absolutely pumped about it. I didn't draw out this year but there are always other years! I am hoping to shoot something bigger than the mister does sometime in the future!

Panko - my new love!

I have found my new love - Panko! It is so wonderful and tasty. I first heard about it through The Pioneer Woman but then another friend made me fried pickles and I was hooked. I went and bought a couple of boxes and we made squash and sliced pickles. Oh my gracious! We are now wanting to have it quite often.
Just a few hints for when you make it, first, coat everything in flour, then an egg or egg/milk mixture and then the panko. We loved the fry daddy for this since you don't really have to flip it. Don't make this when you are hungry 'cause you will burn your mouth trying to eat it!

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.



We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.



That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.



That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.



He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.



He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.



He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.



He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attention to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. 30 things to do this summer....

30 things I vow to do this summer.... I am enjoying this summer so lets see if I can think of 30 things that I am wanting to do. Head over and see the other topics at Mama Kat's and see if you can find something else that you like as well!

1. Make salsa so that we have enough to last through the winter.
2. Learn how to use a pressure cooker to can green beans and possibly other things. I have heard that chili is good and that would make it super easy for dinner.
3. Get a tan that is from being outside, even if it is a "farmers tan".
4. Make multiple kinds of pickles.
5. Keep my house clean so I am not stressing.
6. Learn how to can tomatoes.
7. Spend some time relaxing outside.
8. Lose weight so that I feel comfortable.
9. Go floating down the creek more than once.
10. Cut down my computer time in the evenings.
11. Read at least 5 books over the summer.
12. Watch the whole first season of Glee in one day (or maybe two).
13. Spend some time with friends around the campfire.
14. Take Roxy to the water and let her play.
15. Go out and eat with Mister at least once a week, just the two of us.
16. Start making Christmas gifts.
17. Start buying Christmas gifts.
18. Clean out, shampoo and wax my car.
19. Finish ripping the guts out of the inside of the bronco and build a roll cage inside it.
20. De-clutter my house.
21. Organize my craft stuff.
22. Keep up with canning so that we have lots of yummy food this winter.
23. Make sure and at least once a week have nothing to do when we get off work.
24. Not wish the summer away, no matter how hot it is.
25. Grill out and eat healthier.
26. Eat more fresh veggies out of my garden.
27. Give away some of the veggies to those around me.
28. Shoot my bow enough to pull 50 lb. draw weight.
29. Take a blanket out in the dark and watch the lightening bugs (fireflies) with Mister.
30. Go target shooting with the husband and father-in-law.

Garden 2010 Update

I took some pictures last week and didn't get to post them yet. So without further waiting her it is! I have tons of volunteer tomatoes coming up in the strangest places! Here is one of those. Here is some more of the garden.

Garden 2010 update


This is what I took out to plant a week and a half ago. I was so excited to get them into the ground. I planted cucumbers, zucchini, green beans, tomatoes, jalapenos, bell peppers, romaine lettuce, dill, onions, cilantro, parsley, and basil. I think that is all!!! Two rows of red onions and one row of yellow onions. I love to cook with them.

My cute little cucumbers. They have since died so I will be putting seeds into the ground and growing them outside. Lesson learned that they are very delicate.

It is bigger than last year thanks to the Mister!
